In 2017, the global sales of new energy vehicles exceeded the one million mark for the first time. The booming new energy vehicles led to the development of related technologies. Wireless charging technology is one of them. The related concepts of wireless charging technology have been proposed since the 19th century, and research institutions have successively conducted technological research and development; after 2007, wireless charging technology has entered a stage of rapid development; around 2010, the automotive industry began to apply related technologies one after another. In recent years, wireless charging has become a hot spot. Numerous parts suppliers, car companies, and technology companies have launched tests for wireless charging of new energy vehicles.


◆ Kia successfully test wireless charging technology


According to foreign media reports, on April 10, Hyundai Kia’s American Technology Center is testing the wireless charging of cars. Although wireless charging is still an emerging technology, it does not mean that only expensive luxury cars can enjoy it. Recently, Kia Motors announced that after three years of research and development of fast charging wireless technology, they have now cooperated with the Mojo Mobile and Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Energy Office of the US wireless charging technology company to perform wireless charging on a Soul electric vehicle fleet. The testing of the Soul electric vehicle is also the only electric vehicle sold by South Korean car companies. It is reported that Kia this wireless charging technology can provide more than 10 kilowatts of electricity for the car, charging efficiency up to 85%. It is worth noting that even if there is a deviation from the charging device while parking, it will not affect the normal operation of the charging. This is definitely good news for drivers with poor parking technology.


The wireless charging of an electric car is similar to the wireless charging of a mobile phone. A car company will install a transmitter coil on the ground, and a corresponding receiver coil will be installed in the car when the two coils are connected in a straight line. An electromagnetic field is formed between the transmitting and receiving coils, and electrical energy is transmitted. However, as with wireless charging of mobile phones, there is also a problem of energy loss in the process of wireless charging of electric vehicles, so automobile manufacturers and research institutions are currently trying to increase the charging efficiency as much as possible. Kia also frankly stated that the current wireless charging system is still unable to achieve mass production, but there has been a significant increase in energy output and efficiency.


◆Static wireless charging: parking charge


Continental: At the end of 2017, Continental Automotive announced that it will launch a wireless induction charging board equipped with sensors. It is understood that this wireless charging network system mainly relies on the charging board placed on the ground to emit electromagnetic, the induction coil on the car receives electromagnetic and uses the principle of electromagnetic conversion to charge the vehicle battery. This system, in combination with the micro navigation device, allows the vehicle to be accurately stopped above the charging plate, which is 10 times more accurate than the conventional parking assistance system.


The mainland company stated that the wireless charging system can achieve a power of 11 kilowatts and an efficiency of 90%. It can charge 1 mile for 90 seconds and 20 kilometers for 20 minutes. It is reported that this technology has been carried on the BMW 530e model, and will be applied to some Mercedes-Benz models in the future. In addition, the Continental Group is currently researching and constructing a fully-charged wireless charging transmitter for parking lots so that electric vehicles can be charged at any time during driving.


Evatran's Plugless Power System: As early as 2016, Evatran has developed a Plugless Power system that provides wireless charging for the Tesla Model S. The system consists of two parts, a charging board and an adapter. The charging board is placed on the ground or in a parking space and is connected to the power supply via a cable; the adapter needs a professional to install on the bottom of the electric vehicle. In simple terms, the adapter accepts the power of the charging board for wireless charging. After the installation is complete, the user can simply charge the car to the charging pad to charge it. The hourly charge capacity can travel 20 miles, and the Model S can be filled with about 10 to 12 hours, depending on the battery capacity.

Qualcomm Halo: In May 2017, Qualcomm announced that it had completed a trial of wireless charging for electric vehicles. It is reported that at a speed of 100Km, a wireless charging power of 20kW can be achieved, and it is tested that wireless charging of two running vehicles is performed at the same time. Unlike most inductive charging, Qualcomm Halo technology provides high energy transmission across the space and is suitable for a wide range of models. Its multi-coil design allows efficient energy transfer even if the charging pad is misaligned with the vehicle.


WiTricity: WiTricity is a start-up company born out of MIT Labs and focused on wireless charging technology for more than 10 years. Mainly based on magnetic resonance wireless charging technology, that is, the use of near-field spatial magnetic field for energy transfer, through the selective energy exchange between highly-coupled resonators, so that the power supply and receiving equipment to accurately adjust the match, now has 245 patents. WiTricity's wireless charging is similar to Qualcomm's Halo technology and therefore also becomes a competitor. However, WiTricity does not intend to manufacture the hardware used in the car's wireless charging system. Instead, WiTricity licenses its intellectual property to others and provides partners with reference designs for building hardware. Currently, WiTricity has cooperated with Toyota, GM, Nissan and other car companies.

It is understood that the advantages of wireless charging are mainly reflected in three aspects. The first is high security, because wireless charging does not require the plug and plug process, and it is not affected by rain and snow and other weather and extreme environments. It can also face complex conditions. use. The second is high reliability, wireless charging without mechanical wear compared to wired charging. The third is that the convenience is good, it can realize automatic charging, and solve the problem of the convenience of driverless last kilometer.


However, in the process of accelerating the development of wireless charging industrialization, it has met the constraints of non-uniform standards, few engineering practices, and high application costs. Although faced with many difficulties, the application and popularization of wireless charging technology may only be a matter of time when new energy vehicles develop rapidly.
